& Then I Wake Up
Throughout my life I have had various recurring dreams. I have always found recurring dreams more peculiar than the one-off dreams that usually occur. Recurring dreams are thought to signify unacknowledged issues in your life, which causes stress. When the issue is resolved in your life, you typically cease having the recurring dream. What I find truly interesting is the stories that your mind fabricates while you’re in distress.
I thought it was more interesting to focus on the recurring dreams themselves, as stories, rather than trying to decode what the stressor was in individual’s lives. I reached out to many people asking them to write down their recurring dreams, as well as their sex, age, age while dream occurred, eye color and if they dream in black and white or color. I got many submissions, but chose only eight to feature as illustrations.
The illustrations are visual representations of a certain aspect or scene in eight different dreams. I chose similar color pallets and similar title sequences to make them cohesive. The name of my project “& Then I Wake Up” came from the end of many of the stories I heard. Although many of these people had their dreams as children they still remember the dream as vividly as I have tried to portray them in my illustrations.
BIG ASS-TROID
"I’m standing in a room. It’s not a room that I am familiar with, like it’s not my room, but it is my room in the dream. The room does have darkish green walls. I’m looking out of a window and there is kind of hilly type situation about a half-a-mile away on the horizon. There is also a cement slab close to the building. It was kind of like a school, but more like a house. There was a basketball goal post on the cement slab, but I’m not really sure why it’s there. I’m looking out of the window, and behind the hills, there is this big asteroid that zooms through the sky and hits behind the hills. It’s all fine for a second, but after that moment of silence there come the ripples of blast. The first ripple of blast is coming towards me and ripping up the ground. I feel a hotness on my face like “Oh, I’m going to die,” & then I wake up."

APPLE?
"When it was around Halloween time in real life I would have this dream. I think that I dreamt this because my mom would always warn me when it was time to go trick or treating not eat apples that you got because someone could hide razor blades in it. Clearly that story affected my psyche as a child. In my dream I was in this room that looked like my parent’s room, but the walls were painted a really dark red and everything in it was a little dingy so it was more like an old house. So, I guess it wasn’t really their room it was just the same shape and size. There was a big four poster bed and very antique furniture. It was obviously an older person’s room in an older house. You could tell it was an old woman’s room because it was floral bedding and trinkets around etc. On the night stand next to the bed there was an alarm clock with the big red numbers, the digital clock. All of a sudden an old and wrinkled woman’s hand would come out and point at the clock and say look at the time. It would be 2:42, that was pretty scary in itself. Then, for some reason, I knew 2:42 was the time I was going to eat an apple with a razor blade inside of it. I’m not sure how the time was associated with the apple with the razor blade inside of it. She would point at the clock, I would look at the apple with the razor blades & then I wake up."

CASTLE OF DOOM
"Me, my brother, and my mom are walking in the woods and we come upon an old castle. No matter when I have the dream me and my brother are both very young in the dream I am about eight years old and he is about four. We decide that we are going to go inside the castle for the night. When you enter the front door there is a drop off and a trampoline. In order to get into the castle, you have to jump down onto the trampoline and jump forward because if you jump straight up you will hit your head on the ceiling and turn into a skeleton. There are many skeletons dangling from the ceiling. Me and my brother get through the trampoline trap no problem but when we look back my mom has hit her head and turned into a skeleton and is dangling from the ceiling. As upset as we are, we continue through the castle’s rooms because we can’t go back through the door we came in from. The next room is a ball pit that you have to search through a ton of balls to look for a key that unlocks the next door. The ball pit is like a huge McDonald’s playground ball pit. My brother finds the key and as soon as we unlock the door there is an ugly witch that chases us across a huge room and up a winding staircase. The witch keeps grabbing at our feet as we are running up the stairs and she is scratching our ankles as we run up. When we get to the top of the tower of the castle we have to jump out of the window on a slide that takes us back out of the castle. It ends with me and my brother holding hands walking away from the castle & then I wake up."

FROZEN IN TIME
"After watching Austin Powers at what is most likely too young of an age I started having this dream. I lived in a neighborhood near the loading zone of an Albertson’s growing up. In the dream it had been transformed into a secret cryonic freezing chamber. My sister, my dad, my uncle and my cousin had decided to freeze themselves and I had to tell them goodbye. They would try and tell me that they would be woken up in a couple hundred years, but I was still always very upset because I would never get to see them. They would step into the clear chamber & then I wake up."

UNRESTROOM
"I go into a bathroom and it is just never ending bathroom stalls. I turn a corner and there are more stalls. All of the stalls have walls and doors only half way up. You can see into all of the stalls. I just keep looking for one of the stalls that you can’t see into. When I think I am ok to go to the bathroom in one with a whole wall, someone always walks into the bathroom. Then I have to wait for everyone to leave & then I wake up."

THE STREISAND
"I think the reason that this happened is because I watched a movie with my mom with Barbra Streisand in it and I thought she was ugly, but mostly I didn’t like her nose. It was right after that when I started having these dreams. My bedroom at the time had my bed against the wall and a floor-to-ceiling window next to it and in the front of the yard was a tree. In the dream I was asleep in my room and I don’t know how it happened, it was always very quick, but all of a sudden I would be standing next to the window with Barbra Streisand holding my shirt from the back. She would just throw me through the window by my shirt and the glass would shatter. I was never severely injured. I was always just very annoyed because I wanted to be asleep, but instead, I was getting thrown through the window. She had that short, blunt cut, cropped hair with bangs. Barbra was always wearing a hippy-like, flowy, blue jean, bell-bottom-sleeved dress and a choker. I probably had that dream twelve times. Every time I saw Barbra Streisand on TV or in a magazine after that I would think “Wow, I really hate this woman! She is the worst of all time.” In the dream she throws me, I land on the ground, & then I wake up."

CRUNCH TEETH
"I know this stems from my tooth being knocked out at a bachelorette party. I started having dreams where I could feel all of my teeth had crumbled and were in my mouth. All of my teeth had not only fallen out, but they were in crumbles in my mouth, sort of the consistency of kitty litter. The only constant in the dream was the teeth crumbling. I was at work, sometimes I was at the grocery store or the gym. The places changed, but every time I would be talking and then all of a sudden, I would start tasting a substantial amount of teeth crumbles in my mouth. I wasn’t embarrassed about my teeth falling out, I would just be annoyed at the way that the teeth were crunching in my mouth, kind of the way you get a grain of sand in your mouth and you crunch it at the beach. I would try and spit it out, but every time I would spit out the teeth-crumble kitty litter, more teeth-crumble kitty litter would appear in my mouth & then I wake up."
