& Then I Wake Up

Throughout my life I have had various recurring dreams. I have always found recurring dreams more peculiar than the one-off dreams that usually occur. Recurring dreams are thought to signify unacknowledged issues in your life, which causes stress. When the issue is resolved in your life, you typically cease having the recurring dream. What I find truly interesting is the stories that your mind fabricates while you’re in distress.

I thought it was more interesting to focus on the recurring dreams themselves, as stories, rather than trying to decode what the stressor was in individual’s lives. I reached out to many people asking them to write down their recurring dreams, as well as their sex, age, age while dream occurred, eye color and if they dream in black and white or color. I got many submissions, but chose only eight to feature as illustrations.

The illustrations are visual representations of a certain aspect or scene in eight different dreams. I chose similar color pallets and similar title sequences to make them cohesive. The name of my project “& Then I Wake Up” came from the end of many of the stories I heard. Although many of these people had their dreams as children they still remember the dream as vividly as I have tried to portray them in my illustrations.
